Susan Ward

Susan Folwell Ward, of Severn MD, passed away October 19th , 2023 in Baltimore, MD. Sue was born July 20, 1951 in Philadelphia and lived 72 years. Sue lived on her family's London Britain Township, Chester County farm until 1956 when her father, William H. Folwell III and mother Anne Dunaway Folwell, moved to Lemont, PA for Bill to begin employment with the Pennsylvania State University's Agricultural Extension Service. Sue attended State College (PA) Area Schools for the lower grades and graduated in 1969 from Westtown School, near West Chester, PA. After high school she returned home to State College to earn Bachelor degrees in Art and History at Penn State. Sue entered the U.S. Navy in 1975 and over the next 30 years advanced in a career as aCommunications Technician, Trainer, Watch Supervisor, Project Manager, Staff Officer, Advisor, Analyst, and Historian. While in service she earned an International Studies Master's degree at Old Dominion University. Her Navy experience lead to tours in Adak, AK, Diego Garcia where she was promoted to Master Chief, Wahiawa, HA, Norfolk, VA, Puerto Rico, and Fort Meade, MD. It was at Fort Meade that she met her future husband, Master Chief George E. Ward. They were married April 25, 1981 in State College. PA. Susan's military decorations included two Defense Meritorious Service Medals, three Navy Commendation Medals, one Joint Service Achievement Medal, two Navy Achievement Medals, two Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation Awards, one Meritorious Unit Commendation, eight Good Conduct Medals, one National Defenses Medal, and one Humanitarian Service Medal. Sue was a private person, enjoyed music, loved to travel and read, appreciated art, and enjoyed adding to various collections she assembled over a lifetime. While living at Servern she held memberships in the Chief Petty Officer's Association, the Fort Meade E-9 Association, the Fleet Reserve Association, the National Cryptologic Veterans Association, and still had time for a Literature Book Club. Sue is predeceased by her mother, Anne Dunaway Folwell, of State College, PA, her father William Hazleton Folwell, III of Philadelphia, PA, her stepfather William Hart, and her husband George E. Ward. She is survived by her brother, Robert C. Folwell and his wife Jacqueline Loerch Folwell, of Boyertown, PA, and their children Rebecca Smith, wife of Adam B. Smith of Pottstown, PA, Amanda Folwell of Audubon, PA, Katrina Johnston, wife of Mathew M.C. Johnson of Corning, NY, and her three children Conner, Savanna, and Rowan Johnston. Sue's grave site service will be at the New London Cemetery November 11, 2023, located at 1986 Newark Road, New London, PA (or Lincoln University PA) at 11:00 am.
